Step-by-step guide on applying for and securing the auto-entrepreneur/profession libérale visa in France. (Titre de séjour auto-entrepreneur)

This blog aims to provide a comprehensive step-by-step guide on applying for the auto-entrepreneur or profession libérale visa following the APS (Autorisation Provisoire de Séjour). This visa will enable you to pursue self-employed activities and extend your stay in France.

The Auto-entrepreneur visa, known as "Titre de séjour auto-entrepreneur," is initially issued for one year, and can be extended further(1 year, then 4 years,..) after the initial period. This visa may serve as a potential pathway to permanent residency, provided that taxes are duly paid.

1. Creation of "Auto-entrepreneur" Status

The initial crucial step involves registering as an auto-entrepreneur. Following a successful registration, you will receive a certificate called 'kBIS' or 'extrait de k-Bis.' This certificate will include vital information such as your business address, siret and siren numbers, category, and other pertinent details. You can complete the registration process by visiting the provided link.

To ensure a smooth process, it is vital to apply at least 3 months before your visa expiry date. Once you fill out the online form, you'll need to upload a signed and scanned copy of your ID on the website. There will be a specific sentence to write on that scan copy as well, and you'll receive guidance throughout the process on the website itself.

  • I advise registering an activity that you possess some familiarity with, have prior experience in, enjoy doing, and believe will have lasting potential.
  • It is essential to ensure that you select the appropriate category for your business, whether it falls under "profession libérale," "activités commerciales," or "artisan".
  • If you establish the auto-entrepreneur status well in advance of the extension deadline, make sure to consistently declare your income through the website to maintain an active status. During the APS period, if you do not generate any income, it is acceptable to declare 0 euros as your earnings.

2. Application for the auto-entrepreneur visa

Submit your application 2 to 3 months prior to the expiration date of your APS visa.

The first stage of the process entails submitting your visa application and essential documents through the online platform. Following the prefecture's verification and approval of your documents, you will be notified via email and the online portal to proceed with scheduling an appointment.

The necessary documents can differ depending on the specific prefecture. In this guide, I will provide you with information based on the scenario of an applicant residing within Paris (postal codes 75001 to 75020).

Ensure that you provide all the required information as requested and proceed to upload the documents(Scan copy, pdf) listed below.

b. Passport,

*As of July 24, 2023, if you reside in Paris (postal codes 75001 to 75020), a bank statement is not necessary. However, it is important to note that other prefectures may require bank statements as part of the application process. Therefore, it is advisable to verify the specific requirements from the website of the prefecture where you currently reside.

* Busines Plan:

The final version to submit online or carry on the day of RDV should be in French. However, you can easily draft your business plan in English and utilize tools like Google Translate or other software to paraphrase it online. The following website provides paraphrasing services for free and also helps in correcting linguistic and grammatical errors.

The business plan ought to encompass details such as your identity, educational and professional background, how you arrived and settled in France, your arrival date, studies pursued, and any employment undertaken while in France. Additionally, it should address the nature of your business, the registration date, your revenue-generating strategies, client acquisition methods, and service sales (illustrated by example scenarios). It should also outline your potential clients, estimated earnings for the next three years, income and expenses projections, the designated bank account for tax declaration, and future plans and roadmaps.
